What is a Mehendi ceremony?

Mehendi ceremony is an important pre-wedding ritual in many Indian and Arabic weddings. The typical Indian marriages start with the mehendi ceremony. The gorgeous bride-to-be and usually all the females in the family gather together for a fun-filled afternoon or evening and adorn their hands and feet with flowers, leaves, and abstract henna patterns. There are so many different styles of henna patterns and mehendi to choose from.

As per certain traditions in different cultures, even the groom applies a bit of mehendi on his hands. According to the ritual, the bride is not allowed to step out of the house after the mehendi ceremony.

Mehendi ceremony is essentially organized by the family of the bride and is usually a private affair which takes place in the presence of friends, relatives and family members. The scale of the festivities depends upon individual choice. Some people celebrate it with great grandeur while some make it a simple affair.

Why do we Apply Mehendi?

The idea of applying mehendi on the bride is to make her feel lavishly decorated as though the mehendi designs are extravagant jewelry. For those who don’t want to wear a lot of mehendi, they can opt for Arabic designs where the Mehendi motifs are only applied to one side of the hand and feet. Designs are more elaborate and depending on what the bride prefers, the henna is applied on the front and back of her palm, forearm, till above the elbows, and on the feet till below the knee.
