The wedding Mandap is a small area that has floor seating’s for the pandit, or religious priest, the bride, the groom and the parents of the couple. The Mandap has a kalasha and a kund for fire. The seatings are around the items. The Wedding Mandap is also filled with fruits, flowers, silks and gold all laid out on plates called the Thamboolam.

A kalasha is a metal pot with a large base and small mouth, that is large enough to hold a coconut. The kalsha is believed to be a symbol of auspiciousness representing either Ganesha, who is the remover of obstacles, or his mother Gauri, the Goddess of household bounty or the Godess Lakshmi. The Kalasha is used in almost all Hindu festivities that are related to marriage and childbirth.

The Kalasha is made of brass or silver depending on the class and social status of both the families, and is placed in front of the bride and groom. The kalasha represents the human body. It is filled with holy water from holy rivers like Ganga or Cauvery. The Kalasha is also filled with holy water from holy rivers like Ganga or Cauvery, a coconut and some leaves. According to the Hindu religion this denotes that the soul that occupies the human body is ‘pure’.The ‘poorna kumbam’ or the kalash signifies a balance of the body, mind, soul and the five senses in the bride and groom.

The fire in a Hindu wedding is believedto be holy and is the witness or ‘saakshi’ to the marriage. According to Vedas, Agni signifies purity and spirituality. Since ancient times Agni is deemed as sacred. All the wedding rituals like the vows, mangalyam, saat pheras and saptapadi happen around or in front of the Agni Kund.
